If you are a Canadian investor, there is a very good chance that you know who Kevin O’Leary is. Briefly, he is a self-made billionaire and occasional co-host of BNN’s Squeeze Play as well as one of the dragons on CBC’s Dragon’s Den. Kevin is a highly opinionated capitalist who brings tons of energy to the television programs he participates in. On Squeeze Play, he constantly reminds listeners that he has his own mutual funds (O’Leary Funds). I like to compare the performance of my models to Kevin’s funds out of curiosity. After all, Kevin is wealthy and I’m not and therefore he must be a much better investor than me. Right? Well, maybe not.
Let’s compare the performance of the ETF2X models that I am most comfortable with against the O’Leary Global Equity Income Fund.

The time period covered is based on the first date that the O’Leary Global Equity Fund traded to present. On average, my funds beat Kevin’s fund by 54.8% in less than a year. Ouch Kevin!
If Kevin reads this, I have one question – When are you going to hire me?
Of course, such a short time frame does not necessarily provide a forecast for future relative performance but I’m pleased as punch with my performance relative to one of Canada’s best known entrepreneurs.

No surprise there! I’ll leave my opinion of O’leary out but I did review the prospectuses of his funds. Specifically, I was interested in the Executive Compensation, as it were. O’Leary’s goal is to make O’Leary richer, and he’s the first to admit that at every opportunity, as you are surely aware. These funds will certainly accomplish that while not neccessaily so for its investors. If I had to choose, you’d get my money before KO.

I like comparing my performance to that of perceived investment superstars such as Kevin O’Leary and Warren Buffett. Interestingly, since I started this blog, I have been able to beat these guys but I fully realize that the comparisons are only short term. I guess the point is that individual investors really can succeed when they take control of their investments.
